Erinnerungspeicher: EN PARALELO

2025, installation with sound, curated by Mag. Margit Fröhlich, BA, produced by Klaudia Fritz

Erinnerungspeicher: EN PARALELO (Memory Storage: EN PARALELO) invites visitors into a space of reflection while simultaneously opening an architectural vision in the making. Inspired by the traditional storage structures known as Tschardaken in northern Burgenland and Hórreos in northern Spain, a new construction emerges. For generations, these structures served to dry and store corn, grain, and firewood, ensuring survival. Today, they are protected monuments and form part of the cultural heritage of both Burgenland and Galicia. Although their original function may have faded, they remain powerful symbols of rural identity and resilient subsistence economies. These buildings shaped social and economic structures, defined ownership and spatial boundaries, and condense the knowledge of many generations.

The architectural reinterpretation by Austrian-Spanish artist Manuela Picallo Gil stores memories through visual elements and sound fragments, addressing migration, cultural heritage, and the transformation of rural spaces within the tension field between tradition and change.

The sound component forms an audio archive in which personal memories from various individuals from Burgenland and Galicia can be heard, alternating between dialect, Galician, Castilian, and Standard German. The archive currently has a duration of 31 minutes. The installation is accompanied by a publication featuring texts by Marlene Wagner, Sigrid Wentzel, and Manuela Picallo Gil.

The exhibition at the Artbox in the Kulturzentrum in Mattersburg was musically opened by Graničari.
